Wedding Classics vs. New Hits

Whether you are  getting married this weekend or 16 months from now, your “Must Play” list will consist of a blend of classic party music as well as the latest dance hits.  When pciking the music requests for your reception we suggest keeping in mind what we at Premier Sound refer to as the “Rule of 50″.  Simply put, the number 50 represents the maximum amount of songs the DJ will be able to play during the dancing portion of the evening.  Figure 13-15 songs per hour.  And….  once you begin to compile your list those songs will add up quickly. 

The dance portion of the evening traditionally will consist of a great mix of oldies, slow songs, your favorite party songs from the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s, your favorite songs from the 2000′s as well as the newest dance hits.  When choosing your music requests you’ll want to keep in mind the age and demographics of your guest list.  The goal is to get each guest on the dance floor at least once.  Try choosing songs that will appeal to all ages for the first 45-60 minutes of dancing.  

After that first hour consider who will then be doing the majority of the dancing.  Will it be the wedding party and friends of the bride and groom?  If so, this is a great time to cater the music to that demographic (favorite songs from your high school or college era, for example), as well as the newer dance hits.

Another item to consider is your feelings on group dances…  Classics like the “Electric Slide” are still popular among guests, as well as newer classics such as the “Cupid Shuffle” and the “Wobble”.  Guests tend to enjoy the group interaction of these songs, so even if they are not your favorite you may want to consider still having your DJ play them.

Ultimately the music at your reception will be highly influenced by your song requests.  We are here to share  our opinions, experiences and assist with your song request in any way we can.

Choosing a DJ

Wedding Guests Packing the Dance Floor

 

The month of January traditionally starts the new booking season for wedding vendors.  With the biggest bridal shows in WNY being held in the next few weeks, newly engaged couples will have plenty of opportunity to visit and talk to a variety of the best wedding professionals in the Buffalo/Niagara area.

Choosing your DJ will be just one of the many decisions that you will have to make.  What makes your DJ decision different, and a bit more difficult than your other vendors, is the fact that a DJ company provides an intangible service.  Wedding venues, caterers and photographers all provide a product that you can see, taste smell and touch.

A DJ provides an experience.  They are hired to MC your event, assist in entertaining your guests through their personality and song selection and keep the pace of reception flowing based on the timeline put together with their clients.

Even if you see a DJ at a wedding or event it may not be a great indication of the service they could provide at your event.  They most likely are playing songs and executing an agenda based on their clients’ wishes and what you see and hear may not be in line with what you envision for your reception.

This does not mean that DJ would not be a great fit for you.  Premier Sound has been asked to share our opinions and advice on what newly engaged couples should consider when hiring a DJ.  You can check out that information here.  Sure, we have our opinions, but I understand why people may be skeptical of a DJ giving advice to potential clients on hiring a DJ.

She’s not from WNY and no, we don’t know her.  But a client shared this post with us because they thought it was so insightful during the the process of choosing their DJ.

A New Look at Premier Sound

If you are a current or former client of Premier Sound, you may not recognize our new look.

Premier Sound has been serving the Western New York wedding and events market with top quality DJ service since 1985. Today we enjoy the reputation as being one of the area’s most established and most requested companies. In addition to great DJs, we also provide a variety of uplighting and dance floor lighting options, as well as photo booths.

We recently decided to update our company logo and branding to better reflect the stellar reputation that we have built over the past 27 years. You will notice a new and improved website as well as a blog to provide us a forum to better communicate with our clients the latest company offerings and news.

We have also added a new division to our company… Function Photo Booths. As the demand for Photo Booth entertainment continues to grow we felt it was a logical decision to separate the services we offer to better reflect the unique qualities of our DJ and Photo Booth entertainment.
